The cocktail party can either be for friends or more formally for business associates. Cocktail parties were traditionally the before part of a dinner but have now evolved to become a party theme in it’s own right. They should be held between the hours of 18:00 and 22:00 and should last between 2 – 3 hours!
I hope these cocktail party ideas help you plan your event.
1. Dress – The dress code which should be stated on the invitations is formal attire. Black tie for men and red or black dresses for the ladies.
2. Props – You should have areas where your guests can mix their own drinks. This will add to the fun. As far as decorations go…black and white balloons would certainly add to the occasion. If you have a budget (or if you’re charging it to the company) consider hiring a Butler for an added touch of class.

3. Music – I would suggest classical or jazz. Some of my favourites are Bill Evans, Eddie Harris
or Tosca
for down tempo classics.
4. Food – The beauty of cocktail party food is that you can really get eclectic. Go with little bits from many different sources. I would concentrate on finger buffets, maybe have a waiter to serve the food to your guests on trays. The emphasis must be on small bites, but lots of them and lots of choice. Go through the full course range; hors d’ oeuvres through to desserts.
5. Drink – You can either have your own cocktail mixing area or hire a bartender (or a friend) to mix the drinks. Popular cocktails are the Cosmopolitan, dirty, apple or chocolate Martini. Well actually anything Martini, so stock up on this. You will also want to have plenty of champagne to hand. Make sure you have a supply of different shaped glasses for the different cocktails, umbrellas and straws. I would also overdo it

6. Invitations – You could send out your invitations on a cut out of a cocktail glass. You should also set up a Facebook event page to invite everybody! This is how things are done these days!

General Theme Party Ideas
No matter what theme party you choose, there are some general things you should keep in mind.
1. Start a Facebook group! Everything is done via Facebook these days especially parties and social gatherings. So you should definately start a Facebook group either instead of or as well as sending out normal party invitations.
Creating a Facebook group typically increases attendance rates. Think about it, when was the last time you were invited to an event via Facebook. Didn’t you check the page to see who else was coming? Didn’t the amount of people and exactly who was coming influence your decision to go? Of course it did and it will be exactly the same for your theme party. Also you can use your group to keep your guests informed of changes and also you can add photos and videos to the group after the party to make it extra memorable.
2. No matter what theme party you go for, make sure you comprise the theme into every element of the party. Consider your invitations, food, drink, costumes, props and venues. Oh and music too. Consider your theme in everything you do.
