You’re going to find out about Roman party costumes, decorations, games, music, food, drink and invitations. That should be enough to make your party extremely memorable for all.
Roman Party Costumes
There are many Roman party costume ideas you should consider. You don’t necessarily have to go with the obvious toga or Roman soldier costume, but we’ll include them with a description just in case. Remember that you can purchase your costumes online for a good price or you can make your own. The difficulty of making your own Roman costume depends on what you’re going to be of course. So let’s split the Roman costumes into genders:
Roman Costumes For Women
1. Roman Goddess Costumes – If you go to the party as a Roman goddess, then you should take on the entire persona of the goddess for the evening. This means you’ll need to dress like her of course, but you’ll also want to learn about her traits and abilities. Think about some of the following:
a. Aura – Goddess of the breeze.
b. Aurora – Goddess of the dawn.
c. Bellona – Goddess of war.
d. Cura – Goddess of care and concern, she created all humans.
e. Diana – Goddess of the hunt, the moon, virginity and childbirth.
f. Flora – Goddess of flowers.
g. Mania – Goddess of the dead and underworld.
h. Roma – Goddess of Rome of course.
i. Victoria – Goddess of victory.
There are many Roman goddesses, too many to list here in fact but i think i’ve got the best ones for you.
2. Toga – If there are many people being invited to the Roman party then i would assume there’s a fair chance that there’ll be a few people in togas. A toga is extremely easy to make yourself. All you really require is a bed sheet wrapped round yourself one and a half times, with the remainder thrown over your shoulder and fastened with safety pins. You can then go for the extras such as sandals, leaf laurel headpiece and a belt to hold it all together.
3. Female Soldier – Well there’s no other way to describe this costume. You can actually buy female versions of the male gladiator or Roman soldier costume and they’re fantastic.
4. Xena Warrior Princess – Although Xena is actually from ancient Greece, i think you can get away with dressing as her for the party. However if you want to be authentic then perhaps not.
Roman Costumes For Men
1. Roman Gladiator Costumes – We’ve all seen the film Gladiator. Now is your chance to dress like a Roman gladiator for the day. These costumes are actually quite simple but the parts of the costume are very specific which makes it hard for you to make your own Roman gladiator costume. However, if you would like to then you’ll require leather shoulder pads, leather skirt for lack of a better word and leather sash. All these should have Roman insignia on. You’ll also require a sword, gladiator sandals and leg guards. A helmet will complete your gladiator costume.
2. Toga – As mentioned above! Togas are what the vast majority of the Roman population wore. This included the peasant classes, the slave classes and the ruling classes, male or female. It was all about the toga, a very simple garment which is easy to make using a bed sheet. Here is a detailed guide on how to make a toga with photos too! Of course, you can purchase a toga online which will save you time and effort.
3. Caesar – For the Caesar look, you basically have to dress in a toga but make yourself look more higher and mighty than the rest of the commoners at the party. Wear a white toga, but you can also criss-cross it with another red toga going in the other direction, just to make you stand out a little more. You can encrust the white toga, the sleeves, cuffs and collar etc with gold sequins. Go for sandals as well and to top it off you should wear a golden wreath headband.
4. Roman God Costumes – There are many iconic Roman gods for you to dress as, i shall list them below. You should learn all about the god you choose to go to the Roman party as including his traits and attributes as well as his look:
a. Apollo – God of music and poetry.
b. Cupid – Roman god of love.
c. Hercules – God of strength.
d. Jupiter – King of the gods, storm and air.
e. Neptune – God of the sea, earthquakes and horses.
f. Liber – The god of male fertility.
5. Slave – Many upper class Romans had slaves, these tended to be from the African sub-continent. They would tend the fields or look after the household. If you have a friend who is going to the party as a rich Roman citizen for example, then perhaps you could go as his slave.
6. Roman Soldier Costumes – You can of course buy your own Roman soldier costume which will really save you a lot of hassle. The link in this paragraph is by far the best place to go for one. You can of course choose to make your own Roman soldier costume which will be a lot cheaper, however you may not have many of the things needed to make your costume complete. But just to cover all bases, i’ll explain how to make a Roman soldier costume below.
How To Make Roman Costumes
OK, so here is what you’ll need to make your own Roman soldier costume:
1. White tunic – This goes underneath your armour. It’s best if the tunic has short sleeves that stretch to the elbow. If your tunic also stretches down to the knees then this is perfect, otherwise you may need a white skirt like garment for the lower half.
2. Brown leather sandals – These are very important and need to be the sandals that wrap all the way up and around your lower leg. These look really cool and your Roman costume will not be complete without it.
3. Brown leather body armour – This can be either in one piece or two pieces but has to cover your chest and thighs. This body armour is very light for excellent maneuverability, which is still great at deflecting stabs and slashes from swords.

4. Sword – This is of course a specialist item, which you’ll probably need to order. Make sure you have a leather sheath to keep it in or at least a belt buckle to stick it in. Don’t worry, they are made from plastic although you can get more authentic swords.
5. Wrist bands – You can get leather wrist bands, in which case they should be the same color of brown as your body armour and sandals. Or you can go a step further and get golden wrist bands to wear.
6. Red cape – This ties around your neck, or fastens onto your armour.
7. Helmet – This is a final piece and a specialist item. You can order all the specialist items if you have the rest of the costume, which will save you a bit of money.
Roman Party Decorations
As with any theme party, it’s your decorations that will serve to transform your venue and transport you back in time to ancient Rome. There are many Roman party decorations you can do, some will cost a bit of money and others won’t. I suggest you look at your budget, see what you already have at home and pick and choose between the ideas you like best:
1. Decide if your venue is going to take the shape of a specific Roman room or theme and then try and create that. For example you could turn your venue into the Roman senate or a Roman banquet hall. You could go all out and create the Coliseum or some other gladiator arena.
2. If you have any busts, marble statues or large ornaments then put them in pride of place.
3. The table is very important. The table should be made out decadently. The table should also be very low down. The chairs or seats would be best being very low too. This is so that the Romans could sit back, relax and literally lounge about the place in style.
4. Get some chocolate coins. You can use these as currency throughout the party. Make sure you have a cloth pouch to keep them in.
5. Look online for a roman backdrop. You can get a cardboard backdrop of all of Rome.
6. Light the room with candles. There should be no modern lighting allowed at your Roman theme party!
7. Get bunches of grapes and leave them around, perhaps in bowls as a display and a nibble.
8. You can rent out Roman columns if you have any specialist party suppliers in your area.
