A Hawaiian theme party is one where you could do with a really sunny day. It doesn’t necessarily though have to be by the beach as you can recreate the atmosphere of a “Luau” party quite easily in your back garden or a local park. A Hawaiian theme party is your chance to show off your creativity and flare and if you manage to pull off the Hawaiian Party Theme, your guests will never forget it.
The Luau party traditionally centres around good food, music and dancing. Take a look at the following suggestions which you can use to plan your Hawaiian theme party.
1. Costumes – Dressing up is an essential part of this theme. It is no secret that the ladies need to be wearing a Grass Skirt which can easily be made or bought. A “Lei” is a Hawaiian wreath or garland to go round the neck and can consist of seashells and flowers. The ladies should also consider wearing flowers in their hair and a coconut bra is a well favoured added optional. Sandals, floral arm bands and head pieces will complete the attire and make you look fantastic. For the men on the other hand, less effort can be put into the attire and the less fashion conscious may already find a suitable brightly coloured and flowery shirt already in their wardrobe. Matching shorts and sandals and they have the full requisite. Men can of course go with the necklaces and flowers in the hair just like the women!
2. Props – The Hawaiian theme party should really centre around the “Surf Shack” or “Beach Bar.” Scatter sheshells and coconuts around the setting. Beach balls are great and will provide an opportunity for some fun. Also consider a limbo stick (best played when drunk) and do the limbo on the sand. Hula hoops are added extras and you can have contests to see who can hula the longest. Consider hiring a hula instructor or a belly dancer for the occasion. There should be plenty of flowers (orchids in particular) and you can also buy a blow up palm tree for added effect. A great centre piece would be a Tropical Fruit Display!
3. Music – Ska music would not be out of place at a Hawaiian theme party! Hawaii has a proud musical heritage which is out of proportion to the size and population of the islands. Also consider Maoli (Rhythm and Blues), Acoustic Beauty (Pop), Spotlight (Ukulele), On The Rocks (Rock), Bop Tribal (Jazz), The Opening Act (Hip Hop) and Ikena (contemporary Hawaiian). However if you want some relevant but familiar hits, well…I can’t believe that THISactually exixts!
4. Food – What you really need plenty of is fruit and can be place around your Tropical Fruit Display! Bananas, Coconuts, Pineapples, Mangos, Peaches, grapes, melon, Grapefruits and Oranges will all give a traditional feel to your Hawaiian party theme. I would nicely cut them up, keep them in bowls and allow your guests to skewer them with steel skewers or tooth picks. You can also find Hawaiian Chicken and Fish dishes on the internet with ease but you should focus on providing seafood delicacies (budget dependant).
5. Drink – Aaaah yes the drink is what will really give your Hawaiian theme party the edge. If you have a budget then you should really consider hiring a cocktail waitor to whisk up some tropical cocktails for your guests. These should of course all be served with little umbrellas in. If your budget is limited then there is nothing wrong with allowing your guests to make their own cocktails. This can be great fun and you can provide menus and instructions for favourites such as the Aloha, Castaway and the Hawaiian Heartbreaker. Your budget should never limit the fun you should have at a Hawaiian theme party.
